Find your outreach targets in the sources AI cites

Gumshoe crawls the pages AI cites to find mentions worth maintaining and opportunities you're missing. See which brands appear, who wrote each page, and when it was published.

A detective examines three cited articles. Your brand, shown as a purple star, is mentioned in the first two articles and missing from the third, which includes other brands

Find where you're mentioned, and where you're missing

Where you're mentioned

Find cited pages that already name your brand. These are the ones worth maintaining, so you stay in the coverage when those pages get rewritten.

Which pages AI cites most

See how often each page was cited across the answers in your audit. Use those counts to prioritize which sources to investigate for outreach.

Where you're missing

Find cited pages that leave your brand out, including the ones naming your tracked competitors. Gumshoe checks the page content itself, not just the model's answer.

Your citation research, automated

  1. 1

    Collect the pages AI cites

Every source the models used to answer your buyer questions, gathered as the audit runs.

  2. 2

    Crawl those pages

Gumshoe reads the article itself, not just the AI answer, matching your brand and your tracked competitors against the page text and recording the author and date.

  3. 3

    Decide where to focus

Coverage that already names you is worth maintaining. Pages that leave you out are where the mentions are missing.

Head to Head Comparison

Every tool reads the answer. Gumshoe reads the page.

Knowing AI cited a review of your category is not knowing whether you were in it.

The Gumshoe Citation Audit compared with competing AI visibility tools, which are not named
Feature Gumshoe Everyone else What this means
The list of cited pages Every domain and URL the models cited, filterable by model, persona and topic. Yes. The starting point. The models hand this back with the answer.
Crawling the cited page Every cited page is fetched and read. No. The difference between knowing AI used a source and knowing what is on it.
Brands named on the page Your brand and every tracked competitor, matched against the article text. No. Turns a list of links into a list of outreach targets.
Author and publication date Taken from the page itself. No. Who wrote it, and how current the coverage is.

Questions about the Citation Audit

Isn't this just a list of the sites AI cites?
The list is where we start, and any tool reading citation metadata has it. The audit is what comes next: we analyze those pages, so you learn who wrote each one, when, and which brands are named on it. You can't get that from a list of URLs.
Where do the citations come from?
When an AI model answers with sources, it returns the URLs it used alongside the text. We read those from each provider's own response. We never ask a model to list its sources in prose, because a model asked that question will produce a plausible list rather than the real one.
Can Gumshoe analyze every cited page?
Most of them, yes. Some sites block automated requests or time out, and those pages are left out of the counts rather than reported as though nobody mentioned you. So the gap numbers are a floor, not a ceiling.
How do the competitor numbers work?
Pages naming a competitor but not you are a subset of the pages that skip you, so they are not a separate pile to add on top. They also stay at zero until your tracked competitors have brand records with URLs on them, which reads like a broken feature when it is really just missing its inputs.
Which plan includes it?
The Citation Audit comes with Pro at $299 a month and runs monthly alongside your Visibility Audit. The Citations page itself, the list of every domain AI cited, is on every plan including the free sample. The full plan comparison has the rest.
Which AI models cite their sources?
Only the ones that return citation metadata: the ChatGPT family, Google's Search AI Overviews, Gemini Flash and Pro, and Perplexity Sonar. Claude and Grok are both in Pro's default model set and both count toward your visibility score, but neither returns citations, so neither shows up here.
How is this different from the Technical GEO Audit?
The Technical GEO Audit checks whether AI crawlers can read your pages. The Citation Audit checks which pages, yours and everyone else's, AI is already reading. Access first, influence second, and most sites need both.
Can I get the data out?
The whole citation set for a run exports to CSV. The raw citations, meaning the domain, the URL, and the prompt and model behind each one, are also available through the API and Gumshoe's MCP tools. The audit's own output, the page facts and brand mentions, is not exposed programmatically yet. API access is switched on per account on request rather than bundled into a plan.
